TMS Therapy

NeuroMod Health TMS

Why TMS therapy could be for you

TMS therapy is a type of neuromodulation treatment that provides a different approach to treating your depression. You could be an ideal candidate if you have tried multiple anti-depressants and suffered many different side effects or only achieved minimal or partial relief. TMS therapy could be a great adjunct to your existing treatment and enhance your mental health recovery.

What is TMS therapy?

FDA-Approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), involves the use of short pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is a noninvasive nonsystemic (non-drug) method to assist in improving the symptoms of depression and OCD, without any of the negative side-effects delivered by certain medicines.

The magnetic pulses which aren’t stronger than those generated by an MRI, pass freely through the skull to generate an electric current in the brain that elicits neurons to fire and stimulate surrounding brain cells. Recent studies shows that almost 60% of patients with treatment resistant major depressive disorder respond positively to TMS therapy.

During Treatment

The coil is placed at a specific location determined during the assessment stage of your journey. Then, once you are ready, focused magnetic stimulation is delivered directly to the target areas of the brain.

You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head. Treatments last between 3 to 37.5 minutes depending on your specific need, as prescribed by the physician.

After Treatment

Because there are no effects on alertness or memory, you can drive yourself to and from treatment sessions. You can also continue with other routine activities which means you can resume work and won’t need to miss an entire day.

FAQ

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, often referred to as TMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when antidepressant medications haven’t been effective, have ceased working, or as an alternative to medication

A typical initial course of treatment is about 3-37.5 minutes daily over 4-6 weeks.
A vast majority of commercial and Medicare plans have recognized the effectiveness of treating depression with TMS Therapy and now cover TMS as part of their plans.
TMS is generally recommended as a treatment option after conventional antidepressant medications have proven ineffective or when their adverse effects become too difficult to tolerate. Unlike antidepressants, which are absorbed into the bloodstream and can lead to various side effects, TMS is an outpatient procedure that is non-invasive and does not cause systemic side effects.
TMS and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) are both effective treatments for depression, but ECT is linked to greater side effects, including memory loss. ECT necessitates the use of general anesthesia and involves inducing a seizure by passing electrical currents through the brain. If administered as an outpatient procedure, the patient may not be able to drive for up to 24 hours after receiving ECT.

5/5

I had a great experience at NeuroMod Health! Everyone was so kind and caring from day one. Dr Shabbir has such great bedside manner.

She took her time and made sure she answered all my questions and even checked in from time to time to make sure I was doing ok. Melissa was so thoughtful and amazing.

She always went above and beyond to make my experience a great one and always did it with a smile. Dania did my last treatment and was so great and mirrored the same kindness and thoughtfulness I had experienced with Melissa.

I couldn’t be more happy with the staff and my treatments.
